Mayor Will Miss 'Guiding Light'

Can a daytime soap be a "real New York institution"?

That's what Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg called "Guiding Light," the longest-running drama in television history, on Monday, at the fourth annual "Made in NY" awards, presented by the Mayor's Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting.

In April, CBS announced that it was canceling the series, which has been on radio and television for 72 years, beginning on NBC radio in 1937 and moving to CBS television in 1952. The show is shot in the CBS Broadcast Center in Manhattan and on location in Peapack, N.J.

"This fall, the 'Light' will fade after 57 wonderful years in New York City," Mr. Bloomberg said. "I'm not that familiar with the show, myself, but I do appreciate all it's done for our city."

For man who is "not that familiar" with the show, the mayor certainly had some speechwriters who were able to do some research.

"I really hope that Phillip, Alexandra, Alan and all the Spaldings can work out their differences, that Olivia and Natalia find true love, and that we finally find out who killed Edmond!" the mayor said, adding, "I think it was Josh - but I never liked him, anyway."

"Guiding Light" did not actually win an award, but was recognized for its long history. The awards were given to Lin-Manuel Miranda, the composer, lyricist and star of "In the Heights"; the actress Edie Falco; Hungry Man, a film production company founded in 1997; "Sesame Street," the children's program, which enters its 40th season this November; Gerry Byrne, senior vice president for entertainment at Nielsen Business Media; and the Alliance for Inclusion in the Arts, founded in 1986 to combat racism in theater, film and television.
