My father in law is here from France. We will probably go out. Last night we went out for Italian. It was fun. Jack loves pizza!

Does your F-I-L like spicy food? Tex-Mex should be great in Austin, no? What was the name of the Italian place you went to last night? Did you all have pizza
or a mixture of things? Details, Ma'am, details, s'il vous plait!
(So many of us love to talk about food and cooking, I thought that this might be a good topic for the board - but not too many nibblers so far

I just spotted this thread. Today at the office we had a pot luck: lasagna, fried chicken, broccoli casserole, olive salad, cupcakes. Since there were
leftovers, I took some home and had that for dinner tonight.

I feel like I'm on the ole Hee Haw show for crying out loud! "Whats for dinner?".......Fried squirell in possum fat, pickled chicken feet, with a
side of black eyed peas, and sweet patater pie!
Tonight we had hamburgers. Tomorrow night it pork chops.

But what veggies and fixin's did you have with the burgers,
and the same question about the pork chops?
Ms Debbie, that menu sounds pretty good for an office party, especially the olive salad. Was it simply a salad of different kinds of olives?

We went to Reale's in Austin Texas. They are famous
for their pizza, although I usually get the Lasagna. I was not that hungry, so I had a slice of Jean-David's Pizza Reale. Nice!
Tonight after Jack's swim class we went to Threadgill's. The best home cookin' around! I had the 3 veggie plate with the spinach mushroom casserole, black-eyed peas, and corn and Jack had meatloaf and sweet potato fries and mac-n-cheese. JD and Papi had seafood and my sister had the Meatloaf as well. Threadgill's claim to Fame (besides the food) is that it is the first place where Janis Joplin ever played out (her first gig). They still have live music every Wed. night. Cool! |

finishing up the leftovers tonight.

Ms E, the websites of both those restaurants look quite intriguing. Janis Joplin, eh? I ran into her one time in the street in Plao Alto, when we lived in the
SF Bay Area. There is a Pizza place there (in Palo Alto) that is named 'Pizza My heart' which sounds pretty weird until you realize that the name is
from a mangled Joplin lyric: "Take it, take another pizza my heart now baby."
Wow. Possum inerds? You are saying this within ear-shot of me, who is one of the nerd supremes around here, Phillip ? I am
glad you were only kidding ...
Note to Shelly and Jamie: I hope you two do not mind that I pinned (stuck) this topic so that we can kind of keep it going, talking about food even as we talk about books on the other thread. If either of you have a problem with it being pinned, please let me know - I will un-stick it. My reasoning is simply that EVERYONE likes to talk about food and what they had or will have for dinner, if not for breakfast and lunch too. Thanks!

the meatloaf is ground beef and ground pork(can not do the baby veal!), onion, garlic, roasted diced green chiles(cheat and used canned), ground dehydrated
thai peppers which i grow, worcestershire sauce, milk, egg, bread crumbs, ketchup or chile sauce and bacon for top. we like hot so use lots of green and thai
chiles..it is yummy. posole is hominy, pork, dried red chiles, oregano(i use wild oregano from taos area) cumin, onion, garlic and water or chicken
broth.topped with a chile caribe or diced green chiles. tonite it will be without the pork for more of a side dish.
sunday sauce or some people call it sunday gravy is an all day suace that starts with browning meaty ribs, pork chops, beef ribs, sausages and then making the tomatoe sauce with the leavings from the meat. used to serve the meats with sauce over them and then pasta with the sauce also. now i cheat since it is just hubby and me and use ground beef and ground pork, italian sausages, lots of thai peppers, oregano, basil, onions, diced carrots, tomatoe sauce, tomatoe puree, or paste, beef broth(instead of frying up all the meats) parmigiano-reggiano at least 3/4 cup depending onamount of liquid in sauce, fennel seed(toasted)and simmer for awhile. i think that is all in the recipe. if i think of more will add later. sallyann |

The olive salad had green olives, marinated overnight with celery, garlic, and onions. It sounded like it wasn't a written recipe, but something that was
created by the girl who brought it in.

".... ground dehydrated thai peppers which i grow...." All of this really sounds like our family's kind fusion cooking, where we converting every ethnic food to contain LOTS of heat in it, along with very aromatic spices too - way to go! No spice, no dice, really. Ms Debbie, thanks for the description. It really sounds like a good combination of many flavours. I think I am going to try this, but throw in some Italian pickled peppers. May be some crushed cayenne too? Just to give a hint of the fragrance, not enough to taste the heat.

Last night, we had a totally vegetarian fare, since neither of us is able to handle any rich food due to our continuing bout with a bad cold and fever - this
was the fare:
Mulligatawny soup slightly enriched with a hint of butter (just a hint), but LOTS of black pepper and garlic, a pot of cooked millet and stir-fried asparagus Tips with some Indian Spices thrown in. I have to cogitate on what will feel acceptable for tonight, this blasted cold is still hanging on. I was thinking that buckwheet noodles, spiced with white pepper and ginger, and some shredded cooked chicken to enhance protein, and a good portion of stir-fried Chayote squash may fit the mood. We will have to see. It is only 8:30 in the morning

Hope you're feeling better soon!!! I am still having this stupid sinus infection. The dr. gave me steroids so I could make the flight without bursting my
ear drums. Thank God! I have a few more days on antibiotics. I pray they do the trick. It is the longest I have ever had one (I had tried to get rid of it
without drugs at first.)
My MIL is cooking for me while I am here. Nice!!! She is a great cook. Tonight we had veal with some kind of beet looking veggie (but it wasn't beets because I hate beets) and a salad. I always end up eating something I have no idea what it is when I am here. |

Thank you! I am feeling better, but still dragging my feet.
I was trying to guess what the beet-looking vegetable was that you were given to eat by your MIL. Was it the roots that she presented or leaves? The reason I ask is that there is a plant called "Many Seeded Goosefoot" or "Polyspermum" that grows readily in France, and this vegetable, also known as White Quinoa, is one where they eat the seeds (as in quinoa) or the leaves. You don't like beets? That's a pity! They are SO good for you. When I was a kid, I loved cooked beets, but as a young adult, I could not stand the taste and smell of cooked beets, but liked them raw. Now, my taste buds have changed yet again, and I like them in any mode at all. Take a look here if you don't beleive me about its health benefits: BEETS! Today is the day of Hindu Festival of Lights - it is the equivalent of Christmas for us in being the other National Holiday (Christmas and Ramadan being the other two) in my native land. I will go in and see what I can do to come up with a vegetarian feast for the night, with my dwindled energies. How are you coping with your sinus infection?

I am planning to fix some pasta for dinner tonight. Saw them cook a dish that went something along these lines on America's Test Kitchen the other day.
Fusilli pasta, mixed with seasoned tomatoes and fresh mozzarella (which they kept in the freezer for half an hour before mixing into hot past so it doesn't
become all rubbery). I am thinking of complicating the recipe with lots of fresh garlic, crushed and chopped, plus crushed cayenne pepper and a good dose of
chopped Kalamata Olives ... plus some fresh basil that I am growing out in the vegetable garden. May be some of the dry English style Cider to wash it down ...
or simple grape juice, depending on the mood.
How about you? What's for dinner tonight?
