I've been putting off buying The Longing because I have so many books to read, but I'll probably pick it up soon. My
sister gave me a bunch of books to read, among them - four Grisham novels. Right now I am reading The Brethren. I'm only about four or five
chapters in, so not much has happened, yet.
Have any of you ever read Skipping Christmas, by Grisham? It was the basis for the Tim Allen movie, Christmas with the Kranks. I thought it
was a very funny, but touching story.
Jodi Picoult writes a lot of good stuff. A lot of "issue" books that really make the reader think. I've like most of what I've read of her
books, although I found The Tenth Circle and Change of Heart somewhat disappointing.James Patterson's books
are pretty good. I haven't read any of the Alex Cross ones, but I love the Women's Musrder Club series. He also wrote two love stories
(Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas and Sam's Letters to Jennifer) that were pretty good.
I've read most of Nicholas Sparks' books, as well. I hated Message in a Bottle, but have liked most of the rest of them. Oh! And Luanne
Rice writes some good books, too!

I read "Skipping Christmas". It is the ONLY Grisham book I have liked. I read a couple of others and didn't like them at all. He got too caught
up in directions and mundane details for me.
I like Nicholas Sparks' books but they are usually a boo-hoo story. I didn't like the ending of Message in a Bottle; I thought it was stupid to end it that way. |

Guy-I might also recommend a few good books for you..."The Pokey Little Puppy" and "The Velveteen Rabbit", two of my personal favorites!

Look for where are the children, a stranger is watching, The cradle will fall. they are all Clarks first books and the ones that make me ready when she writes another one. He first ones were the best. \Testa, Why I have read a Mary Higgins Clark book is beyond me. " Where are the children" I had that book my dad bought it and gave it to me to read, Thats the book with the red mitten on the cover? Anyways i had the book 20 years ago and did not read it now I want to. MHC really is awesome I love finding new reads and writers I know MHC is not new but I am new to her writings and I love her! Right now I have these books that are waiting to be cracked SK Duma Key NR Tribute, and Angles Fall Donald Tyson Necronomicon: The Wanderings of Alhazred William D Carl Werewolf Apocalypse Christina Dodd Touch of Darkness Book 2 What order they will be who knows? Yes I have read most everything by Dean Koontz. I love his stuff. I haven't read his book "written" by Trixie yet. One of the reasons I love DK so is because he is a dog lover and has a lot of dogs in his books. I cried when I read that his beloved dog Trixie had died. Trixie has a book called "Bliss to You" but I haven't looked for it yet because I am afraid I will boo hoo big time when I read it. |

I used to read Koonz's books. After a while, I needed a break from all the creepiness. I loaned Door to December to
someone about ten years ago and never got it back. I should pick up another copy. My favorite of his was Watchers.

My favorite Dean Koontz book is "Intensity" which was also made into a movie. I've seen it a few times over the years on Lifetime (of all channels). Anyway, this is also a creepy book! rose

All Koontz's books are creepy, but unlike some other horror writers I have read the good guy always wins. He rarely kills off a "good" character
and there is usually a strong female character and a dog.
Someone told me Saul (I can't remember his first name) was a lot like Koontz, but I read one of his books and he killed off a kid. I have not read any more of his. |

Would it happen to be John Saul? I just put a new book of his on the computer for checkout today, it's called Faces of Fear. I have never read any of his
books, but it sounded good: An ordinary teen of 15, Alison, who has a beautiful mom who marries a plastic surgeon. He takes them to live in BelAir where
everyone is beautiful and the Mom and Stepdad talk the girl into plastic surgery. After she has her first operation, she finds a picture of his deceased first
wife and realizes that the plans he's making for her will make her look just like his first wife, but her Mom doesn't believe her. I think it sounds
pretty good, but if he is, indeed, the one who killed off a kid in another book, I'm not sure I want to read it, could be a twist in there that kills off
another one. I get enough of that on soaps!
Some more new ones I put on today are: Anne Rivers Siddons: Off Season Sandra Brown: Smoke Screen (that one sounds pretty good too, although I've not read her before) Jayne Ann Krentz writing as Jayne Castle: Dark Light Stephen Frey: Forced Out Barbara Taylor Bradford: Being Elizabeth Kathy Reichs: Devil Bones--it can't go out until it's "Sale" date of 8/26 Debbie Macomber (my fave author!)-8 Sandpiper Way--it can't go out until 8/26 either **The ones that have the date are the date they are available in the store. We aren't allowed to let them go out until that date, but I'm not sure if all libraries stick to that like we do. In Support of Our Guy

I think is was John Saul. That synopsis sounds good though. I just like to read books with happy endings (even horror ones) because there is enough murder and
such in the real world. We don't need to create fiction to see crazy murderers; all we have to do is watch the news. I don't watch horror movies
either.
Definitely read Sandra Brown if you like romance novels. She is wonderful; she is also ex- Bill Lewis' (Ryan Brown) real life mother. If you like Debbie Macomber, you will like her as well. She has great characters. I think I read an Anne Rivers Siddon book and didn't care for it, but I could be wrong on that.

John Saul it is. I used to read quite a few of his books, many moons ago. Alot of them, I recall, had something to do with kids. Wasn't one "Comes the
Blind Fury"?
Yep it is. Here's his books: Suffer the Children Punish the Sinners Cry for the Strangers Comes the Blind Fury When the Wind Blows The God Project Nathaniel Brainchild Hellfire The Unwanted The Unloved Creature Second Child Sleepwalk Darkness Shadows Guardian The Homing Black Lightning The Blackstone Chronicles The Presence The Right Hand of Evil Nightshade Manhattan Hunt Club Midnight Voices Black Creek Crossing Perfect Nightmare In the Dark of the Night I've read quite a few of those, probably all of the first half and a few of the remaining. He's somewhat "OFF", lol, I remember one of those books had a person copulating with a doll or something, lol. I used to read Stephan King and him all the time. I actually quit King after reading Pet Sematary, there was just something downright evil about that book, it bothered the hell outta me. My favorite King, besides his shortstory's is "The Stand". Love, love, love that book. |

For anyone who enjoys Christian fiction - I have read a lot of different authors, and Karen Kingsbury is by far my favorite. I have never read any books as
amazing as hers. She is so inspirational and just writes phenomenal stories. It's so neat - she has a contest with every book - called "Forever in
Fiction" - she actually has an auction and someone pays to have someone they love established "forever in fiction". So, Karen uses that
person's name as one of her character in the book. It's really great. I'm a member of her fan club, too. She has several different series and I
have read all her books. She also wrote a fantastic two-book series about the Sept. 11., weaving the national tragedy with romance. So, I highly recommend
any and all her books!

Jamie, Karen Kinsbury is the hotest author here right now. We can not keep her books in, and, in fact, many of my patrons are re-reading her! Next is Wanda
Brunstetter, and a newer author (to us anyway) Kim Vogel Sawyer. I also have people who love KK to love Tracie Peterson as well. I would say that probably
about 60% of our patrons right now are big readers of Christian fiction. We have even gotten some romances in by Steeple Hill that are faith based romances.
Shelly, thanks for the heads up on Sandra Brown. I will def. put my name on that new book! I am anxious to get reading that last one in DMc's Cedar Cove series. I also read (in the back of the book there was a questionaire that she answered) that her Christmas story this year was going to be set in Cedar Cove! Yay! In Support of Our Guy

I used to read John Saul's books. But, I couldn't handle how cruel he was to children. I know it's only stories, but
he's just too brutal for me. I always liked Dean Koontz over Stephen King. He can be a lot creepier, but his stories always struck as having the
possibility of coming true. (Some of them, anyway.)
I've read almost all of Debbie Macomber's books. I can't wait for the next Cedar Cove installment. Macomber was supposed to make an appearance at the Barnes and Noble near me, a couple of years ago, but had to cancel due to illness. I was so bummed! When I asked if she would reschedule, her agent (or whatever) said not that year. But, she took my name and address and sent me a signed copy of that year's Christmas book.I thought that was pretty nice. I've only read one of Kim Vogel Sawyer's book (Waiting for Summer), but I really liked it. I also like Francine Rivers..

Have you ever read anything by Dee Henderson? She has a series about a group of grown foster brothers/sisters that is awesome. I don't normally read Christian fiction because a lot of time they are too "preachy" or something.  This series of books is well written and has great characters. The
first chapter of each book can be read on the link above.
Bayley, If that is a recurring theme of Saul, then I am glad I never read another one. I know what you mean about Koontz's stuff really happening because a lot of it happens because of a government experiment gone horribly wrong. 
------------------- If anyone likes to read medical mysteries then Robin Cook is really good. He is an actual doctor and his books are really good, but he does tend to kill people off. His books are scary because they really could come true. 
If anyone likes lawyer type books, William Bernhardt is really good. His books have some comedy to them too. I also enjoy reading Sue Grafton's alphabet series and Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta series. I do not like PC's other series (Andy Brazil) at all. Another good romance novelist is LaVyrle Spencer. I read Ludlum, Nora Roberts and James Patterson as well. Ludlum wrote the "Bourne" books which have been made into movies. He wrote a book called "Road to Omaha" that I found hilarious. No one ever mentions his wit when they talk about his books, but that one was funny. I usually like books (and movies) that have a little romance, suspense and comedy all mixed in. Nora Roberts' books are good for that. I don't care much for her books written as J.D. Robb though. I have never read a Stephen King book. I keep thinking I should pick one up, but seeing his movie previews I think he is warped.

I have read every book LaVyrle Spencer ever wrote! Some of them, a few times. My favorite is Years. I loved that one so
much, I think I've read it five or six times. She wrote some good stuff!

There is a fourth Bourne book out, He Bourne Sanction by Eric Van Lustbader. I hadn't realized that Robert Ludlum had died in 2001 until I was putting this
book on the computer. I found this on a bio of Ludlum:
"Ludlum died in 2001 of a subdural hematoma, reportedly leaving behind several unpublished manuscripts and rough outlines, which continue to be dusted off and published with the help of ghostwriters." I have not read the Bourne books, but have seen all three movies and love them, so I hope that this one will be made into a movie as well. In Support of Our Guy

Shelly, it looks like you and I enjoy very similar kind of authors and books, with some twists of our own.
I also enjoy reading Sue Grafton's alphabet series and Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta series. I do not like PC's other series (Andy Brazil) at all.I like the Scarpetta series up to Blow Fly. That novel I could not stomach, in spite of having tried to read it some half-a-dozen times. I like almost ALL the books that led up to this one. Just finished Sandra Brown's Ricohet. It is very well-written and entertaining, though I have ambivalent feelings about the protagonist Duncan Hatcher. Quite a lot of steamy sex scenes for a police procedural, but written well. Finished C.J. Box's Blood Trail a couple of day's back. I have never read anything by him before, and this book is very well-written, taught with suspense and the characters coming live off the page without the author being too wordy. The novel is set in Wyoming, a state I have never visited, and quite suspenseful. I really enjoyed this one, and am looking forward to exploring his other books. Started reading the latest Joanna Brady novel by J. A. Jance (I like her Seattle-based series too, but like Joanna Brady novels a lot more), entitled 'Damage Control.' These novels are set in Arizona, a state I know almost as well as I know California, and the culture and characters come true to me. I love this series of books! Last weekend, I finished the latest novel in the Inheritance series ('Brisinger') by Christopher Paolini - Fantasy books are the other genre I read besides Mysteries. I had to re-read Eragon and Eldest (the first two volumes) again before reading this third installment because too much time had passed since I read those two. It was well worth the effort, though parts of Brisinger that deal with the election of a new Dwarf leader were VERY slow-moving. I skimmed those parts because I am already reading a whole lot about the elections going on in real life! Shelly, based on what you have said above, I think you might enjoy Marcia Muller's Sharon McCone series and Sara Paretsky's V. I. Warshawsky series.

Didn't Kathleen Turner star in a movie about VI Warshawsky? I saw the movie, but didn't realize it was based on a book.
I just finished books 1 and 2 of the Seven Trilogy by Nora Roberts. Very Good! And very Koontz-like. I will definitely be reading the 3rd as soon as I can. It comes out in December. |
