My husband caught a cold and at his school (he's a high school english teacher) there are like 5-6 kids gone in every class. It's worse than it's ever been in my experience.

Here in Minnesota, they ran out of flu vaccine and have set up a flu hotline. I also was supposed to go in for my yearly physical in two weeks
and my clinic called to cancel my appointment because they are not seeing any healthy patients. The physicians are needed to run the 24-hour flu clinics.
That's a first! I was visiting my in-laws in Northern Minnesota last weekend and managed to squeeze in a flu shot there. Glad I did because there is none
to be found here currently in Central Minnesota.

School was closed here for a week due to absent students and teachers. That was a couple of weeks ago. A 13 year old girl a couple of counties away died from
swine flu and she didn't have any known underlying health issues. A 28 year old woman died as well, but she had other health issues.
They ran out of regular flu vaccine a few weeks ago. They are supposed to get more in November. The swine flue vaccine (nasal spray form) is being given to health care workers under 50 years old with direct patient contact. The shots are supposed to get here soon. My dad got his regular flu shot at the hospital about 3 weeks ago. He went in for respiratory therapy and they gave him the vaccine before he left. I will not be getting either vaccine. I don't come in contact with many people where I work and don't consider myself to be high risk at all. I would rather people that need it (like a pregnant co-worker) be able to get the vaccine with them being limited. Besides the flu is already here and there are no vaccines to be had until some time in November. I can't believe there are idiots out there having swine flu parties. Why would someone knowingly expose their child to the swine flu? I bet the family of that 13 year old would give anything to have had their daughter protected from it.

Flu clinics here where I live (western NY) are closing their doors all over. There are way too many people who want the flu shot
(seasonal and H1N1) and not enough to go around. I am suppsed to see my primary care physician on Halloween. I may or may not be able to get my usual flu
shot. I haven't gotten any calls to cancel, so I'm hoping I can still get in.

There is a 1/3 of all kids in the gradeschool/high school out with some form of flu. The little boy I asked prayer for earlier in the year, Aidan Boydston (who
od on his meds) is in the hospital with a confirmed case of the swine flu and pnumonia. He's a really sick little boy. There are kids all over that are
testing positive for all the flus and the flu shots are in shortage here. I usually get the seasonal shot (people will come in almost dying to the library and
not caring that they could pass it on to us!) but there hasn't been enough for me to get one yet. Not sure if I will get the swine flu shot...doubt that
there will be enough and there are others out there that probably need it worse than me.

Just wanted to update that Aidan is out of the hospital! There have been several more cases in Noah's class of confirmed type A flu. He's been out the
past two days with another virus, as has my niece who is in the same grade, so hopefully he missed the flu bug going around. It has hit so early here this
year!

We got Jack's H1N1 and seasonal vaccinations yesterday. I stayed on hold for ONE HOUR with the doctor to get that appt. The web site said that they were
not accepting patients for the flu vaccination, but I found out that they were getting a shipment in this Mon. so I made an appt. for a bogus reason to see the
doctor, because my husband was afraid to get the H1N1 and was not going to let me vaccinate my son. So I gave him 5 days to research it and I nagged him 4
times before the appt. He kept saying "this is not a good time to decide" ! Well, I told him, "do your research, and we are going to the dr. and
we will discuss it with him." I had already done my research and knew it was safe. Otherwise, I would not have even suggested it! I knew that they would
only have the vaccination for a very short window. This was the only time to decide! I found out after I got there that the doctor had ordered 40K doses and
only got 1K doeses. Also, my girlfriend's doctor didn't have ANY and didn't know when they would be getting any. It is BAD here. Kids can't get
vaccinations!
So anyway, at that rate, I knew that they would be out before the end of the week. I feel like I have won the lottery getting that vaccination! It is probably they will not have any when Jack needs his booster in one month. I have had my seasonal flu shot but was not offered the H1N1 and did not realize that it was available for adults. |

I got my seasonal flu shot at Ralph's pharmacy yesterday. I always have a mild reaction, so I am in bed with a mild fever and flu symptoms today, but I
know that by tomorrow, I will be OK.
No doctor's offices and most pharmacies do not seem to have much of the seasonal flu vaccine available here and I spent two hours calling around to find one pharmacy which did. No private insurance covers the cost - only Medicare and MediCal and State Govt Employees' insurance (don't know about Fed Employees) according to the Pharmacist. So, I shelled out 25 dollars of hard-earned money to get my shot - which if I do not get may cost me a whole lot more. A very pregnant friend (with a young first child) with whom I had lunch yesterday told me that in California, the doctors and clinics had recklessly dispensed all the H1N1 vaccine they got to anyone who showed up demanding a shot, without reserving the vaccine for high-risk populations. So, none is available now, and she has no idea when it may become available. Lots of people at both my and my husband's work-place have been ill lately, but it did not look like H1N1 judging by the duration and reported symptoms of illness. I think I would shop around to see if I can find oregano oil capsules or the oil itself - it is reported to be very protective against the flu virus and is also very pleasant to ingest when tried as simple oil ... drink oregano herbal tea may be - it grows like a forest in my front flower-bed, and my husband would be thankful to my pruning the bush for my 'grazing' |

So if I eat spaghetti (with oregano) will I be protected from the flu?

Surely - but you may have to toss in salad quantities of oregano on your 'paghetti

Health food stores have the oregano oil capules. Thanks for the hint, I didn't know that, I have some in my fridge, gonna get right on that since I know we
are out around here.

You are welcome! Of course, I don't know if anyone has done expensive clinical trials with the oregano oil on influenza, but this was the word of wisdom
from people who believe in naturopathic cures. I think that the side-effects are minimal, so what the hey! Right?

I got my seasonal flu shot, this past Saturday. I also asked my doctor his opinion of the H1N1 flu shot. He said that there has been as
much testing done on it as they do on the seasonal flu shots and he would recemmend anyone getting it when it becomes available. I trust his judgement on
these things and will get the vaccine as soon as I can.

I had the swine flu in 1960,Am I immune to it now?
|
|||
malar2002 |

Conventional wisdom is that any immunity to exposure to the flu virus of the same kind lasts only about a year. So, no - you are not immune 39 years later.

I had heard that older people did not need the swine flu shot since it was similar to an older type of flu perhaps the flu Frances is speaking about in her
post. They are only giving the swine flu vaccine to health care workers who are 49 and younger here and they are supposed to be following the guidelines laid
out by the CDC. Why would that be if there is no residual immunity?
I think they are blowing the whole thing out of proportion as most things are in this country due to our news media. There is a threat, but in most cases the swine flu is not any more severe than the regular flu and most people have no problem recovering from it. The scare is always there for the seasonal flu as well as the swine flu that one may be in that number of deaths caused by the flu every year, but the scare is also there every time one drives on a highway to be involved in a fatal traffic accident. I have also heard from an alternative care provider who doesn't get vaccines that taking the flu vaccine 5 years in a row increases the risk of dementia. Is there any truth to that?? I always take things he says with a grain of salt because he tends to go overboard with natural medicine. Some stuff he says is true; others not so much.

A cousin in law had it a month and a half ago, my neighbor and son had it 2 weeks ago. Pittsburgh is getting its fair share of the flu. First reported child death last week.

There is a threat, but in most cases the swine flu is not any more severe than the regular flu and most people have no problem recovering from it.That picture is changing in a very dynamic way. Wall Street Journal, usually a very reliable source of news reported yesterday that recent research to appear next month indicates that seniors have a high and disproportionate death rate. I read in a Canadian newspaper yesterday a statement made by a doctor about what he is seeing in his neck of the woods: "While young children have the greatest likelihood of getting ill and being hospitalized, they have the least risk of death. Seniors, however, who are said to have been previously exposed to the flu and have the least chance of getting sick, run the greatest risk of complications and death." Here is the link: http://www.oakvillebeaver. I think that for the rest of us who are in good health and not pregnant, it will be totally sufficient to follow good hygienic practices and treat any flu-like symptoms we get with the sensible treatment of rest, fluids and good hygiene. |

Well since we don't have any vaccine available here...I don't guess there is much we can do except good hygiene. I'm always concerned that my dad
may catch something and with his lung issues anything can be a big deal.

Well thank God and knock on wood, so far here things seem pretty under control. No major school closings or illnesses to report and I pray it stays that way as
well as pray for all to recover safely. I have to admit I do believe it is serious as are most illnesses but I do take issue with those forms of media that
crate panic. I don't mind reliable well presented new coverage of any issue, but I am a firm believer that scaring people into a panic never helps
anything. We need facts and sensible attitudes to deal with just about anything in life. I know it can be hard and stressful at times, but in the end it has
always won out when I'm faced with a health crisis for myself, a loved one, or a friend.(jmo)
Malar I will check out the article you posted later today, thank you for the information. Tania in Pennsylvania
