Here is the article if you are interested: annoying_words To me, the most annoying thing in a conversation is not a word but a phrase: people who mean the exact opposite prefacing the insult that they are about to deliver with the phrase "With all due respect" gets my goat every time. What is your pet peeve of an annoying word or phrase?

I mean, I do not understand what is intended by it - it was funny in the last Terminator movie when Arnie said it to the guy, bu tit was funny because he didn't seem to know that it was one of the phrases ...

Lately, I've been seeing a lot of those commercials that urge people to turn in their old jewelry for cash. I climb the walls every time I hear that woman say "joo-lery." I also hate whatever, amazing and any word phrase that is shortened to be "cool." An example would be 24/7. Yes, it's faster, but I hate it. I also hated Not! when that was the big thing.

"Mom, I can't, like, get my hair to lay down" sigh She's not a total, like, valley girl, but all her friends, like, speak like that! GRRRRRR I once told her to use speak the next sentence out of her mouth without saying "like". Well, of course in that sentence she needed to say it the right way, she took three times as long to tell it because she was trying to get around not saying the word! Kids! One word I hear mispronounced is "Library". Patrons come in and say, "It's going to get cold/rain/snow/etc.... so we thought we'd come to the Lie-berry and get movies and books" I just want to scream LiBRary..... Isn't it funny how some things will grate on nerves? Praying daily for our Guy

My DH says that and my kids have tried to pick it up, I refuse to let them, I am the pronounciation police in my house. Not to turn this into a pick on DH thread, but he's got a few of those mispronounced words that drive me nuts, ex., gold for goal, death for deaf, hell say "Sorry I didn't hear that, I must be death". I always say you look pretty alive to me, but apparently you are DEAF! Honestly I'm not sure if it's more of a speech impediment or just laziness on his part, but I always correct, drives him crazy.

I have no idea why since he has no other words that he does this for like the "gold" for "goal" you mentioned. The other night he said this spot on his back was just a "mold". I said it is a "mole". Mold is what grows on bread in the back of the fridge. My dad has many things he mispronounces but I've learned to overlook them most of the time. The funniest one is he says "bablist" for "Baptist". I have no idea why. Sometimes I think he does it just to annoy me. The "like" thing gets on my nerves too, but what is bad about it is I start to find myself doing it if I hear it a lot which drives me up the wall. Dang teenagers!

My wife uses that and "oh well" also. I hate oh well. I tell her that the first words out of her mouth were whatever and ohwell. My 18 year old daughter (going on 11 sometimes and 30 at the same time) uses "FINE" all the time. We tell her be in by 12, or 1, and she responds thats early 3, we say no 1, she says FINE! But its always used with attitutde. So my wife and I joke around using Fine in our day to day conversations. Whats for dinner........meatloaf...... fine! LOL! My MIL always uses the word, same thing. She was try to tell me that something was in the glove compartment. She said the trunk, I looked everywhere in there and it wasn't in there. She was demanding she was right. I looked harder. What made me look in the glove compartment I'll never know, but there it was. I immediately brought it to her attention where I had found it and she repies, same thing! I said no its not. There are 100 more things I can bring up on this. In fact I will. Look over in the off topic for MIL Dilema! In Pittsburgh we are always accuse of speaking Pittsburgeese...... Downtown - we say Dahntan East Liberty - we say Easliberty Did you eat - we say Jeweat No did you - nojew Library - lieberry Februray - Febuary Jewlery - Joolery There are alot more Pittsburgheese words. I live in PutNAM county Ohio. It is putt, like golf putt and nam like bam, some say more num. The old guard, as I like to call them, insist on calling it Putt-MAN or Put-man! Okaaaayyy...that's not even close to right and you graduated school here? When I first moved here I kept having to look at it to make sure I had it right, lol. Lots of people here also warsh their clothes and sweep their floors, while I prefer to"vacuum" my floors and I wash my clothes. Of course, I have a Wisconsin accent, people can tell they are talking to me on the phone still to this day, and I've lived in Ohio for almost 10 years.

Most people I know pronounce the word as Cambull. But, the natives say Camp-bell, like it's two words. And, I remember the people of Gettysburg saying Gettis-burg, instead of Gedeesberg, which is how I've always said it. It took a while to get used to it.

Do you know what"cominstta" means? It is to start,begin, to commence. (It cominsta rain) She said hogg dogg and logg. She never used "ing" which drives me crazy. There is a decorating show on hgtv that I won't watch because this guy drops ALL of his ing's. Another one is ideal for idea. a LOT of women do that. Unbeknowenst: That means unknown. Hafta: have to. What REALLY gripes me is when I catch MYSELF using some of these words!!! Especially the "ing"

Or, dropping the 'g' at the end of every gerund? For example - which of the following do you have in mind: "Eat ice cream on a windy day can be a messy experience if you have long, untamed hair." OR "Eatin' ice cream on a windy day can be a messy experience if you have long, untamed hair." I do not mind the dropped 'g's if it is the natural way a person talks; it is when a person thinks that she is successfully pretending to be the salt of the earth by dropping all her 'g's in every gerund that I want to get up and throttle the twerp. Or he, if it is a he. It seems to happen a lot more with the women though, at least from what I see.

Where I was born and grew up They dropped the letter R from the alphabet, Bostonian have our own way of speaking. Whats funny * strange* about it is we don't hear it. My husband says Masstachusetts and mazzarelly for mazzarella cheese. His daughters correct him. I can't be bothered, after 42 years .Whats the point? He is originally from New Jersey so I excuse it. park car in Harvard yard..When I say that, people instantly know where I am from. ,One way to break someone from saying like all the time is say No I don't like. Teens have always had their own language.Eventually they grow up and come back. Worse than that grown ups using the slang. I could never get use to saying cool for everything. I just don't do it.
