The doctors may say one thing, but we know who is really in control. Be healed and blessed.

Went to the surgeon yesterday. He spelled everything out for my wife and I. He was concered this came back. He wants me to get another opinion
by seeing the oncologist I saw previously. I have an appointment with him on Feb 16. My surgeon feels that we can wait another three months for another PSA
test to see what it does. But doesn't want to wait any longer than that. My reading of 0.5 is microscopic, and it would not show up on any scan now. He
said the pace where this cancer seems to go is in the bones (hip) and spine. The next test will show what we are dealing with, if this is an agressive one or a
slow one.
He wants to start me on the female hormones in my 3 months visit. My next appointment with him is April 28. Chemo doesn't help this cancer. It has no effect except maybe slowing it down a bit and buying time. He said the oncologist might have some new chemo that may have better effects. He did caution me that this cancer can become immune to the hormones and in time, could begin feeding off the female hormones. If that happens, I won't discuss what the time line is and I refuse to believe that will happen in my case. He said he has patients that go 20-30 years with this treatment. So, to the next phase I go. Scared but faithful, worried but confident. I know how you all feel and I cannot express enough how appreciative I am and how much in turn I love you all. Damn, my eyes are watering and I haven't had a single female hormone injected yet. Maybe soon we'll be exchanging receipies and discussing movies like the Notebook and What Women Want and Sleepless in Seattle.

Guy, damn, this sucks. I'm so glad you have such a good attitude. I know that helps alot. You know we love you and will be happy to share recipes and chick flicks with you. Does that mean you will have mood swings with us, too? Still praying for you!

I am really, truly very sorry that these troubles have descended on you. I love your attitude though - you have more panache and verve than anyone I know.
Be easy in your mind - at one point in my career, I was the Lead Scientist on a Prostate Cancer Programme at a US Pharmaceutical Company and did quite a lot of reading of the technical literature on the subject at the time; what I remember is that hormone resistance is generally avoided by keeping the therapy of intermittent duration. Also, for all you know, you may have the less aggressive variety, and it may all come out all right. Remember Jerry ver Dorn? He has been living with prostate cancer for a while now - and just look at him on OLTL! May be you ought to be another star on our small screen, Guy, if your doctor gives you the green light

I see my Oncologist next week, Mon 2-16. To say I am afraid is putting it mildly. He's the one that told me after my operation that if this came back at
all I'd be in trouble. Oh-boy! So keep the prayers going. I'll let you know then whats up.
Sometimes I don't feel so positive and strong mentally. I guess I am not as strong as my mom and sister who both passed away with very aggressive cancers. I appreciate you're all here.

Met with Oncologist, more confused now than before. He said this may be a "bounce", which at times occurs after radiation treatment. It could occur
from a few months to ayear after. The PSA wil bounce up, then it should come back down. He agrees with the surgeon, and wants me to wait until April for
another PSA test. If that goes up again, he said that would tell them more. He also said he's not wanting me to act to quickly in getting hormone treatment
right away. He wants me to wait on that. My questions to him was a resounding WHY!!! But he wants me to wait until the PSA goes up to 20.0????? Again I asked
WHY!!!
So here it is in a nutshell: Surgeon - wants to start me on hormones no matter what during my next visit in April. Radiation Oncologist - Wants to wait until more is learned in April. Oncologist - Says chemo isn't an option yet, more research has to be done to find a knockout chemo treatment which now only buys time with this cancer, and wants me to wait until PSA gets higher to do hormones because hormonal treatment has way too many sides that can be lasting. Like I said, I'm confused.

Prayers still coming your way!!
Are your Dr.s part of a team or are the each treating you individually? I seems that Dr.s are good at confusing a patient when more than one is involved--unless they are a team. My mom had to fight to get my dads Dr.s to confer when he was ill, they all had their own ideas and none really wanted to discuss with the other--but they all should know what is going on with the other. Anyway,

Guy, I am not surprised that you're confused. It does seem as though you're getting some conflicting opinions.
I don't understand why these doctors aren't all over this. I realize that every patient is different, and every cancer is different. But, when my
sister was diagnosed with colon cancer, in late November, her oncologist said he wanted to get her started on treatment, pretty quick. She met with another
specialist at the Roswell Park Cancer Center, in Buffalo and he concurred. She had a colonoscopy, the first week in December, had a port put in six days
before Christmas, then had her first treatment the day after Christmas. Again, every patient is different, but it seems her doctor is acting more
aggressively. I don't understand why your doctor seems to be taking a wait-and-see attitude. Is it, maybe, because the"bounce" can be a false
positive, so to speak? And, that another check could show that your level is where it should be and not elevated after all?
You are in my prayers, on a daily basis, whatever happens. And, I pray you can get some explanation of things that gives you peace of mind.
