A Closer Look: Mallet
GL raises eyebrows this week by outing poor, dead Gus as a crooked cop. Mallet makes the discovery, but Robert Bogue explains why his character is keeping mum.
SOW: What do you think about GL making Gus a bad guy posthumously?
RB: I was really surprised. I thought, "Wow. They're really throwing Gus to the wolves."
SOW: How does Mallet uncover Gus' questionable behavior?
RB: As a tribute to Gus, Harley is trying to close his cases. She tells Mallet things aren't adding up, so Mallet investigates further and learns Gus was letting criminals slide and taking favors. Mallet has evidence Gus was a dirty cop.
SOW: Mallet and Gus were friends. How does this affect Mallet?
RB: It's a blow. He can't believe it.
SOW: Has anyone else caught on to what Mallet discovered?
RB: Harley doesn't know what's going on, but she goes to DA Jeffrey O'Neil to get him to look into it. Jeffrey notices something fishy, so Mallet shreds the evidence as fast as he can.
SOW: Why does Mallet decide to hide the truth?
RB: He is covering his tracks to protect Gus' legacy. He's also doing it so Natalia won't lose her pension and Rafe won't lose his role model.
SOW: By protecting Gus' reputation, isn't Mallet creating his own SPD scandal?
RB: Yes. Mallet's intentions are golden, but he's getting dirty covering up a dirty cop.
SOW: Is Mallet working alone to cover up Gus' mess?
RB: He asks Dinah to see if she can get Jeffrey to back off [the investigation] by going to Doris.
SOW: I hear Dinah bribes Doris to get Jeffrey to back down.
RB: Really? I didn't know that. It works, because Jeffrey ends up cooperating.
SOW: How so?
RB: Mallet tells Jeffrey the whole story, and he gets on board for the same reasons Mallet did. They both work to get the situation to go away as quietly as they can.
SOW: Does Mallet feel guilty for keeping the truth from Harley?
RB: He thinks he's doing the right thing.
SOW: How would Frank handle this if he were still police chief?
RB: Frank would be straight up. He wouldn't play the Dinah card, and he would be honest with Harley. Mallet struggles with that.
SOW: Will fans struggle with the tainting of their beloved Gus?
RB: Regarding the memory of Ricky Paul (Goldin) as Gus, fans will see this as a slap. Eventually, this doesn't do any harm to Gus' character. It makes him more endearing. Springfield needs heroes. Mallet and Gus are both heroic guys cut out of the same fabric. They can muddy us, but hopefully we'll end up being shiny again.
Lizzie Goes Looking for Jonathan
Reva surprises Lizzie with a card from Jonathan and Sarah this week, and urges her to go find her family.
"Lizzie still feels awful for letting Jonathan take Sarah away and staying behind with Bill," explains Marcy Rylan. "Now everything is falling apart with Bill, so Reva steps in to cheer Lizzie up."
Sensing Lizzie is overdue for quality time with her daughter, Reva gives her the Mother's Day card with Jonathan's address on the envelope. Lizzie is skeptical, but Reva subtly persuades her to reunite with Sarah.
"Sarah is still the most importing thing in Lizzie's life," assures Rylan, "so even though Lizzie has doubts, she's thrilled to have the chance to see her."
Lizzie is also grateful for the bonding moment with Reva.
"At one point Reva was dead-set on making sure Lizzie didn't know where Sarah was," reminds Rylan. "Now she ses Lizzie has matured through her suffering. She is letting Lizzie in on Sarah's whereabouts, because she finally trusts her."
Lizzie prepares for the trip by loading up her car. When Bill sees Lizzie's car is full of suitcases and bags filled with toddler clothes, he realizes she's going to find Sarah.
"He asks Lizzie if he'll ever see her again," says Rylan. "Lizzie tells him she doesn't know, then she takes off. He doesn't try to stop her."
Lizzie trusts Bill won't tell anyone she's leaving and keeps her plans secret from the rest of Springfield.
"For Sarah's safety, she doesn't tell anyone where she's going," explains Rylan. "Alan has calmed down, but Lizzie still fears he could go after Sarah, because he gets psychotic whenever Sarah is involved. It's tough. Lizzie doesn't know if she's coming back. She's still in love with Bill, so she's thinking she'll never see him again."
Lizzie doesn't tell Jonathan she's coming, hoping he'll welcome her when she finds them.
"Jonathan will be surprised," chuckles Rylan, "but if he asks her to stay, she might stay."
Our hunch is that Lizzie isn't cut out for a life on the run.
Revolving Door
Beth Ehlers' (Harley) last day at GL was April 25. The actress is taking a month off and is taking meetings with various other soaps - she was reportedly at Y&R the week of April 28 - to see what other job opportunities are out there. One source says that on the heels of RPG's defection from GL (ex-Gus) to AMC (as Jake), CBS is especially anxious to keep Ehlers, even if it can't be on GL. No comment from P&G, but a source close to the show insists that negotiations are still ongoing and GL is doing everything it can to keep the actress.
